Metabolic Testing in Calgary
Your resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the number of calories your body burns at rest, just to keep you alive. It typically makes up the largest share of your daily calorie burn, yet most plans guess it with a formula.
What is an RMR test?
RMR is the core test in our metabolic testing line-up. We use a REEVUE® metabolic analyzer by KORR Medical. It measures the oxygen you breathe in at rest and calculates the calories your body burns from it. Your report shows:
Resting energy expenditure: your measured calories per day at rest
How you compare to prediction: whether your metabolism runs faster, slower or about the same as standard equations expect
Daily calorie targets: for fat loss, maintenance or muscle gain, once your activity is added
Fuel use (optional add-on): your respiratory exchange ratio (RER), which shows whether you mainly burn fat or carbohydrate at rest
Who should get an RMR test
People whose weight won't move despite consistent eating and exercise
Long-term dieters who suspect their metabolism has slowed
People managing metabolic health concerns such as diabetes, heart health or thyroid conditions who want calorie targets based on their own data
Athletes and lifters setting fuelling targets for a training block or weight class
Anyone who wants a baseline to compare against in 6 months

RMR testing in Calgary
Your resting metabolic rate is the energy your body uses to support essential functions such as breathing and circulation while at rest. Measuring it provides a useful starting point for nutrition planning, helping our registered dietitians tailor recommendations to your goals.
Our non-invasive breath test uses a REEVUE® KORR metabolic analyzer to measure your oxygen consumption while you rest. The measurement takes approximately 10 minutes and helps determine your resting energy expenditure. Your registered dietitian explains the results, giving you a clearer understanding of your metabolism and how this information can inform your nutrition strategy.
FAQs
-
There isn't one "good" number. RMR depends mostly on your size and muscle mass. What matters is how your measured RMR compares to what's predicted for you, and whether your eating matches it. Your dietitian explains both.
-
Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is measured under strict lab conditions, usually right after waking in a facility. RMR is measured at rest under normal conditions and runs slightly higher. For setting calorie targets, the two are close enough that RMR is the practical choice.
-
Calculators estimate RMR from population averages. Indirect calorimetry measures your own oxygen use, so it reflects your real metabolism, including the effects of past dieting and muscle mass.
-
Yes. Our dietitian specialize in performance nutrition, optimizing meal timing around training, adjusting macros for your activity level, and tracking body composition to ensure you're building muscle efficiently.
-
Every 3–6 months if you're actively losing weight or changing your training, or once a year to check in.
-
Building lean muscle mass increases your resting metabolic rate. Our body composition analysis shows your current muscle mass, and follow-up testing tracks increases. We also identify if you're undereating, which can slow metabolism over time.
-
Building muscle raises your RMR, and eating enough prevents the slowdown that comes with long-term under-eating. Re-testing shows whether your changes are working.

Testing done by our registered dietitians can often be claimed under extended health benefits or a health spending account. We provide official receipts; we don't direct bill.
